RE: Purchased a fifth wheel. Need help selecting tow vehicle.
I suggest a 1 ton Diesel DRW, any thing smaller and you will have the tail wagging the dog. Most if not all the 1 tons have the same engine and Transmission as the 3/4 ton. It is all the rest that goes with a 1 ton that makes the difference.

The best advise I could give is you and family need to make the decision together. Do your research, check out the floor plans and remember a 38 foot HM is much smaller than a 38 Ft. 5ver.

WE have had both Center and Rear Kitchen. My observation is that in the size you are looking for the Rear Kitchen will have the largest Lounge area. Our RK was 31Ft and had a bigger lounge than our friends 33ft CK. Ignore the claim of dish breakers as someone said that is an urban legend. Also as mentioned you loose the large rear window with the RK.
It comes down to what suits you and family best.

There were a couple of models, a few years ago. But I can't find in my searches anything now! This is a 2003 36 ft Montana 5er with front overhead living room with a giant picture window. Nice, huh!

The Montana was very nice, one problem no basement storage. I mean hardly any at all.
Not familiar with the Advantage.

Another funny I notice is that many diesel owners use the higher resale argument, but them say they will hold on to the truck so long it will be devalued anyhow. What is the point of higher resale if you keep the truck so long it need a rebuild to be of use to another buyer?
Now that is a funny remark, if you are trying to support a gas over diesel argument. Based your concept how many gassers will you wear out and replace during the life of 1 diesel? You might want to rethink that approach.

I guess that makes me and Tuck Trend mag. both wrong and of course the entire trucking industry. that's why we see so many of those huge gas rigs on the road. You can say and believe what you want but no one that has owned a diesel and tows a larger RV would ever switch back.
Most of you are driving 3/4 and 1 ton gas rigs simply due to cost of a diesel.

I stand corrected, a chevy or GMC diesel sell for more, at least here in Calif. Used Ford and Dodge diesels sell for a lot less than Chevy/GMC diesel trucks. Anyone that has driven or towed with a Duramax w/ Alison, Ford or Dodge diesel will tell you that the Duramax has more towing power and better mileage. I know that is hard to swallow for you Ford and Dodge guy's put we know it's true. I have owned 3 Fords and am now on my 2nd Chevy and will never go back to the fuel guzzling ford again.
Now that should draw some heat.

When you say GVWR are you aware if that is for a TT or 5ver? You should have a higher rating towing a 5ver than a TT.

Its good to see the trend of "diesel everything" is reversing. While a diesel is a great piece of hardware, most owners will never get to the mileage needed to overcome the added capital costs. I don't know about the rest of you but I can't afford to be pound foolish to save a few pennies on fuel anymore. If I were putting 30,000 miles of the truck every year I'd feel differently, but the 10,000 to 12,000 miles per year make the gasser setup a better choice for me.
There is one more thing to consider. When it comes to time to sell or trade in the Diesel you get a lot more for the diesel truck. So lets add it up; more towing power, better mileage and better resale value. All that considered the price doesn't seem that high. If you don't tow much then get the Gas buggy, but stay out of the mountains. If you tow a lot of miles annually and tow in the mountains I can assure you, you'll never be happy with a Gas truck.
The choice is yours and yours only, only you know your driving needs and what you can afford.

I hesitate to mention a GM product to all you Ford people, But if your open to a GMC or Chevy you can improve both your mileage and pulling power with a Duramax and Alison 6 speed. I just traded in my 2005 Chevy 2500HD with the Duramax and Alison for a 2008 Chevy 3500HD duramx with Alison 6 speed.
My 05 got about 21 to 22 MPG on the Highway depending on speed, as for towing mileage that depends on the weight of the trailer you are towing. When I towed my 04, 30 ft. cougar (11,000lbs.) I got 12 to 13.5 MPG, when I bought my new Bighorn (14,600 lbs.) that dropped to 11mpg. Haven't towed with the new truck.
Not trying to start the old fight between Ford and Chevy lovers, just sharing my results.
Just a thought

We purchased our Heartland Bighorn 3400RL last Dec. to date have spent 5 months in it and we both love the unit. Would we buy another, IN A HEART BEAT!! As previously mentioned, the company is great to work with and they really do stand behind thier product. Can't say the same for many of their other manufacturers out thier.

Both Jayco and Heartland are first class companies, both build nice 5vers. I guess from what I have seen here I am in the minority. My dealer sells both Jayco and Heartland, we bought the Heartland Bighorn 3400RL and love it. However to compare apples to apples you need to compare the Designer to Bighorn ( the Big Country is a step below the Bighorn ).

Nice idea, but will never happen. There will always be someone needing advise regarding weight and lots of members ready to oblige. Lets just hope when we don't agree we can do it like gentlemen. Name calling and snide remarks only so a lack of confidence and or the bully in some of us.

Why don't we start a trend, tell me about the good experiences and the good dealer/service by name and locating.Someone sounded like they didn't like Camping World yet I know others that swear by them. Sounds like not all CW are equal. We could start a list, the service and dealers we like and focus on trying to send our friend to them.
Lets give credit where credit is due.

We spend the winters in Arizona where the late Feb and March temps get into the 80s and low 90s. No humidity but a little warm. By using the BR a/c you keep the noise out of the lounge area. In the summer it really helps especially with the humidity.
Just my 2 cents worth.

I believe you have an in-line fuse to the Jack motor. I had the same problem several years ago with my 04 Cougar and that's was what I found.
